چکیده

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) was reinforced with 0-40 vol% hydroxyapatite (HA) whiskers using a novel powder processing and compression molding technique. A powder mixture was uniaxially pressed into a composite powder compact and compression molded into a flat composite bar using an open-channel die, such that the HA whiskers exhibited a preferred orientation along the length of the bar and tensile specimens. As expected, increased HA whisker reinforcement resulted in increased elastic modulus, but decreased ultimate tensile strength and strainor work-to-failure. PEEK reinforced with 40 vol% HA whiskers exhibited an elastic modulus of 16-18 GPa. PEEK reinforced with 20 vol% HA whiskers had an ultimate tensile strength of 70-80 MPa. Human cortical bone exhibits an elastic modulus of 17-26 GPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 80-150 MPa in the longitudinal direction (direction of principal stress). Stiffness coefficients measured by ultrasonic wave propagation indicated a level orthotropy also similar to that of human cortical bone tissue.

Processing and tensile properties of hydroxyapatite-whisker-reinforced polyetheretherketone.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) was reinforced with 0-50 vol% hydroxyapatite (HA) whiskers using a novel powder processing and compression molding technique which enabled uniform mixing at high whisker content. Texture analysis showed that viscous flow during compression molding produced a preferred orientation of whiskers along the specimen tensile axis. Consequently, the elastic modulus or ultima...

Micromechanical Model for the Orthotropic Elastic Constants of Polyetheretherketone Composites Considering the Orientation Distribution of the Hydroxyapatite Whisker Reinforcements

Hydroxyapatite (HA) whisker reinforced polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites have been investigated as bioactive materials for load-bearing orthopedic implants with tailored mechanical properties governed by the volume fraction, morphology, and preferred orientation of the HA whisker reinforcements. Therefore, the objective of this study was to establish key structure-property relationships an...

Hydroxyapatite whiskers provide improved mechanical properties in reinforced polymer composites.

Synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) whiskers have been utilized as a new, biocompatible reinforcement for orthopedic biomaterials. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) was reinforced with either the synthesized HA whiskers or a commercially available spherical HA powder using a novel powder processing technique that facilitated uniform dispersion of the reinforcements in the matrix prior to compression m...

Effects of the mold temperature on the mechanical properties and crystallinity of hydroxyapatite whisker-reinforced polyetheretherketone scaffolds.

Porous and bioactive polyetheretherketone (PEEK) scaffolds have potential to replace metallic scaffolds for biologic fixation of permanent implants adjacent to trabecular bone, such as interbody spinal fusion devices. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the mold temperature and PEEK powder on the mechanical properties and crystallinity of hydroxyapatite (HA) whisker-re...

Micromechanical model for hydroxyapatite whisker reinforced polymer biocomposites

A micromechanical model was developed to predict the elastic moduli of hydroxyapatite (HA) whisker reinforced polymer biocomposites based upon the elastic properties of each phase and the reinforcement volume fraction, morphology, and preferred orientation. The effects of the HA whisker volume fraction, morphology, and orientation distribution were investigated by comparing model predictions wi...
